Andnow at the end of episode 4, i'm going to have this little whinge:
Not only does Margaret tend to camp and the wagon, she works with the men to tend the cattle (on horseback in a corset and restrictive and cumbersome frock ... can you imagine the chaffing?); she takes the most perilous role in crossing the river and does it in style.
She does all this and James can't even help her while she hangs out the stuff in the wagon that got wet? Just stands there talking to her while she does it all?
I mean. Just get fucked with ALL of that.
It's like, being generous and stuff letting her do a 'man's work' ... you know, patronising the wee filly despite the fact that she is excellent and you damn well need her, yet never stooping to do a 'woman's work'. As though that has no intrinsic value.
I know it's set in the past but these stereotypes still exist. And the role of mother and homemaker has absolutely never got the credit it is worth. And men who choose it are largely scorned.
So absolutely unfair to everyone.
Congratulations to this series for showcasing strong women though. Very impressive specimens.
