No, the Gambino family is a New York City mafia family.
It's the DeCavalcante family, named after Simone "Sam the plumber" DeCavalcante who took over the mafia family in 1964. Born in 1913, DeCavalcante was a member of the mafia almost all of his life. His reign as boss only lasted 5 years, however, as he was sent to prison for 5 years in 1969. Upon his release, he retired to Florida, and he died in 1997 at the age of 84.

For example, in the series, the boss dies of stomach cancer which eventually led to Tony Soprano taking over the family. In real life, the acting boss died of stomach cancer. The Chicago mafia organization was never named after a person, not even its most famous gangster, Al Capone. What did people call that organization? There are really two correct answers.
