Left of Centre who was an early poster here had quite a collection of bamboos growing in his garden, including “Buddha’s belly” bamboo.



There is a vein in our bodies that does not go to the heart. What is the name of that vein or what organs does this vein connect?

The vein is the hepatic portal vein, connecting the digestive tract to the liver. It relies on the pulse of blood to drive the blood along that vein.

Next question:

Who was the general most responsible for the South losing the Civil War?

General Lee was the rebel general did most to lose the war for the south, direct attacks bleeding the limited manpower the south had. The Lost Cause myth deified Lee, Jackson but that was officers like Early deflecting the blame from themselves.

True, Bragg was a lousy army commander. I will accept that answer, his failure and defeat at Chattanooga opened the Lower South to invasion, to Sherman.

Firstly, NO VEIN IS DRIVEN BY THE PULSE OF VENTRICULAR CONTRACTIONS. The movement of blood through the veins is controlled by its one-way valves. The blood is simply prevented from moving backwards. Since the circulatory system is mostly a "closed system", and blood simply can't stagnate in the veins(like in "varicose veins"), as long as there IS a heartbeat. And, the blood is simply "pushed" along because of these "one-directional" valves. Regardless of the heartbeat. I am being extremely general in this explanation. Muscle contractions, static and osmotic pressure gradients, will also affect venous blood flow.

Bragg was not only known for his competence for losing battles, but also his penchant for shooting his own soldiers. In my book, this makes him the worst.

Anyway. What is the ONLY horror movie to ever win an academy award for the best picture?

Very good guess. And, would certainly have been my choice. The exorcist was nominated for 10 academy awards, and won in 2 categories(not best picture). But it WAS the first horror movie to be nominated for best picture. Here's a hint. It is NOT generally thought of as a horror movie, if it were NOT for the cannibalisms.

heheheh was a pretty broad hint.

“Delfts blue” is a fine white slip glazed with tin oxide and hand painted with chromium oxide. the tin oxide gives a white background and the chromium oxide turns blue in the kiln.

There is or was a purple “Delfts blue.” What did they use to create the purple color (in place of the more usual blue?)

They used manganese oxide. One Delft Blue factory left, De Porseleine Fles, but there used to be many and some in Gouda. Much imitated but the imitations are easy to spot.

A question about a current topic:

Are there such things as “sterilising” vaccines? Vaccines that stop you getting the disease?

Afraid not! Except in theory only. For this to happen, the vaccine virus(retro or vector) would need to be exactly the same as the infecting virus. And, since we don't give people vaccines made with live unaltered, or unmodified pathogens, this is NOT going to happen. And since all pathogens evolve and mutate, a "sterilization vaccine" will be impossible to make. You are talking about a "GOD" vaccine, that would prevent all viruses from entering the cell and replicating.

Our natural immune system's antibodies is our best "sterilization vaccine". There are no viruses used in any of the Covid-19 vaccines. Vaccines may prevent the severity of the disease, but they can't prevent you from becoming infected(sterilizing vaccines). This is because our immune system is not proactive, it is reactive.

That is the correct answer! I checked up on this after someone wanked on and on that the COVID vaxxes weren’t sterilising ones.
