Oh, one day battle, hmmm. Not Gettysburg and not Shiloh. Fredericksburg with silly old Ambrose Burnside commanding the union forces. Battle of Marye’s Heights.

I have looked it up, couldn’t stand not knowing. Some say THAT battle was the turning point of the war, not Vicksburg, not Gettysburg as it guaranteed no recognition by England, France or Russia of the Confederacy.

Bloody tho Grant’s campaign in Virginia was I don’t think any battle had 23K casualties
I should have said approximately 23K. And, that casualties include those killed, wounded, and missing/captured. Hope this helps.

3,659 killed(Union/Confederate)
17,300 wounded
1,770 missing/captured

So, approximately 23K casualties. All within a 12 hr battle.

Yeah, looked it up.
Maybe you can answer, alternatively, what was the last battle of the American Civil war(Not last MAJOR battle)? This battle took place on May 13th, 1865. Or, what was the first state to succeed from the union on Dec. 30th, 1860? Or, name the southern American politician, born into slavery, and stole and american confederate military ship?

The last battle of the war was won by the Confederates. Was in Texas.

The first state to secede was of course South Carolina—it got treated pretty harshly in Sherman’s March through the Carolinas. The soldiers considered that state had incited the rebellion and war.

South Carolina is correct. And, the last battle of the Civil war, was the battle of Palmito Ranch, in Cameron County Texas. And, Robert Smalls was the southern politician, born into slavery, who stole a confederate military ship.

Wow, got the book on Robert Smalls on order! He did literally chose to be free or die, with some odds on the dying! One shell landing on a boiler. . .
