What Orwell called a good bad book?
So interesting to learn the reasons for the Civil War—the planter class seeing their influence waning and the ability to move slavery into new territories also decreasing.I am 139 pages into McPherson's "Battle Cry of Freedom" which is about the Civil War. The book is 909 pages. So far, the war hasn't even started yet. McPherson is setting the stage by discussing the politics of the U.S. going back some 20 years before the war started. He is doing a good job of giving the reader an understanding of the pressures that fractured the country and which ultimately broke it into two warring sides. To me, it's fascinating reading.
