suddenly. Was it the rain? Tomorrow the boredom of contacting Optus. The bloody backup 4G service does not seem to be working.

surprised.? Just think of all those people.... most recently those badly affected by the storms in Vic, who have had no power for days and days, and likely to continue.? No power no internet. What a fucking disaster this government has scammed us for .... NBN is somehow a sacred cow.

I want my old secure landline back.. when it didn't matter if the power was on... I could still call OUT.

How fucked is it? and.. they pay themselves millions. I had 7... read that...7 diff techs come out to my premises over two yrs... just imagine how much money they made for 7 visits for ONE job... eh? eh? and finally ?? finally? oh great and mighty NBN .. after paying for shit for 2 yrs they agreed... my home was TOO FAR from the NODE. .

Got minimal compensation.. in the form of credit against future bills FFS, and that was it.

Everyone who was paid bonuses for their work on the NBN should have to pay those scurrilous and undeserved payments back to the public.
THEY ARE NOT FIT FOR PURPOSE.

It’s still no internet for my area…. As the storm did some damage here hey!
And what surprised me was the landline phone wasn’t working either, along with mobile reception not working.
No phone at all and no power or running water.
Plunged into a dark age.
I can cope with carting buckets water and putting up with generator noise, no tv or internet. But to have no phone contact either mobile or landline was the pits. My kids were frantic to get in touch to see if we were okay.
But get this, the media or our government seemed to ignore the hell ww all we’re going through, the flooding, the blocked roads with trees, and they were huge trees that were healthy too. The damage to many homes with trees destroying the houses, and power lines down everywhere. Two people died as a result of this storm and it seems many don’t know about it… reports are the damage was worse than the bushfires…. Oh but they only talk about COVID sniffle cases in some house cluster. They don’t want distractions when other disaster happens!
It’s going to take at least a month for clean up and power restored.
The locals are asking why this has not had much coverage?
The damage and trees fallen on our own property is extensive and a lot of fences damaged.
Never seen anything like it.
Using phone internet is painfully slow. Takes forever to download.
I can post photos later, hopefully.

So getting back to the landline phone…. Always was able to call out or have calls in… during any power blackout… but this time, it was dead. And I’m shocked this happened.

The old landline phones had a 5 volt powerline from the exchange, that power could be used if the power in your area was out. FTTN has backup batteries in the node cabinets, don’t know how long they would last.

once the NBN moves into an area landlines are through the internet anyway as the old system is shut down. Calls during blackouts are no longer possible like they were under the old system because the calls are now through the internet.

And the batteries in the node cabinets last 5 minutes probably, assuming they are checked and replaced etc regularly.

See this is not good. As I found out being unable to go anywhere due to trees blocking road, no telephone/internet at all and we felt quite isolated if not quite stricken, all we wanted to do was tell our kids we are okay, and see if hubby’s brother was okay.
But totally nothing was very confronting.
No news to know what was happening if there was a war or whatever. Honestly, I don’t mind living in isolation, but not totally isolated and cut off from everything and everyone. That was awful. Made me think how awful it would’ve been during war time when families separated and maybe decades later are reunited.
How reliant we’ve become with easy comfortable travel, ease of contacting each other and the internet. Really missed the internet! We may not get ours back until next month.
In the meantime I have mobile phone data and it’s painfully dial up slow

As soon as NBN becomes operative you lose your access to a secure landline IF there is NO POWER.

I understand your horror.. I complained bitterly to anyone willing to listen, but it didn't matter. This was deliberate... and I have never understood WHY.?????????

Wow! Just had another outage. The Libs really did find the crappiest way to roll out a national broadband network, didn’t they? Unfit for purpose!
