I have never heard of earthquakes in or near Melbourne before this one.

Depth was 10 metre which is quite shallow.

Adelaide gets the odd tremor now and then. Before we arrived in SA in mid 1957 the south of Adelaide had a pretty big tremor—a house showed a huge crack from that tremor until quite recently. Another, smaller tremor happened while we were here—sounded like a train or huge truck moving up the street.

But Adelaide is in a horst und graben system of not great age as geology goes, Melbourne isn’t.

The Great African Rift Valley is another, bigger, example of horst und graben geology.

Yes I was in bed, sleeping in, hubby was outside and I felt the bed shake so much it woke me up!
I realised it was a tremor. So I waited it out.
Daughter went to tell dad and he said he thought it’s was a big rumbling truck going past or tree falling down. We’ve had lots trees come down recently so we always blame the trees!
The tv is on a swivel stand and had moved a bit. A picture frame fell on the floor, and a light fell out of the ceiling. Hopefully I don’t discover any damage. House is on a concrete slab and doesn’t give much. Last big one we had years ago put a hairline split lengthwise ceiling in house and split concrete out back where Hills clothes line is.
