Australian road trips consist of driving through small towns at slow speed gawking at the mundane and stopping for fast food at McDonald's, stopping overnight at a motel or camp site and then taking off early for another 16 hours driving.
What's the point?
I have driven around Australia through living in Cobar central NSW and traveling to Broken Hill, Wilcannia, Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne, Burren Junction, Bourke, Walgett, and various other towns usually driving for 12+ hour stretches. A 600 km trip in one day was not uncommon.
Except for Brisbane, Sydney, and Melbourne, I never stayed at any small town for more than one night. The longest trip was the initial trip from Melbourne to Cobar at the age of 21 which I chose to do via the East Coast Highway traveling along the coast to Sydney stopping overnight and then on to Cobar via the Great Western Highway.
