Australia invites international backpackers to help ease workforce shortage

I bet there are millions of Afghans, Yemenis, and Syrians who would love to come and help.

However, they have no chance of entry.

It's a sham and a scam. The backpackers are used as slave labor.

There is no shortage of labor in Australia, there is an excess of shirkers and indolent social welfare addicts.

The country suffers from a labor shortage caused by unprecedented nationwide Omicron outbreak

Australia on Wednesday issued an invitation to international backpackers and students, seeking to reinforce its failing workforce as an Omicron outbreak leads to record high levels of deaths and hospitalizations, straining the country’s healthcare system.

During a televised press conference, Prime Minister Scott Morrison promised an AU$630 (US$453) visa application fee for any backpacker or student who arrives in Australia within the next 12 or 8 weeks accordingly, encouraging them to work as they travel through the country.

“Move all the way around the country, and the same time join our workforce and help us in our agricultural sector, in our hospitality sector, and so many of the other parts of the economy that rely on that labour,” he said, adding that additional AU$3 million will be given to Tourism Australia to support the marketing program.

According to Morrison, there are around 150,000 students currently overseas who have an approved visa to come and study in Australia, as well as 23,500 overseas backpackers who have existing visas to enter the country.

The appeal was issued on the same day the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) advised against traveling to Australia, as well as other 21 countries around the world, due to the rising number of Covid-19 cases.

The call for international workers comes after Morrison faces a wave of criticism over his handling of the Covid-19 Omicron variant outbreak. The latest poll shows only 41% of Australians approved of his performance in the beginning of the election year.

Australian businesses are struggling with the growing toll of workers on sick leave or isolated as close contacts. The workforce shortage also led to supply chain ruptures, exaggerated by plummeting consumer confidence.

At the same time, Australian healthcare services are under pressure because of rising hospitalizations, with 5,025 people admitted as of Tuesday. On Wednesday, 67 new deaths and nearly 80,000 new cases were detected. Nearly 1.7 million of nearly 2 million cases of the pandemic have been reported in the past month. ...

Would be nice if Centrelink recognised seasonal work. There is horrendous paper warfare every time seasonal work ends and you need benefits again. Also there are rules against leaving your address, etc. And the pay is not good if you are a fruit picker.

I did have a customer at the shop, had converted a bus into a mobile home and would start in Qld and work down to Adelaide doing agricultural work. Did well enough he could work 6 months the year and have the other six off without needing benefits. But he did more skilled work. (Oh, the motion of the buss kept the carbon nicely stirred up in the 20 flagons of spirit he had in a hidden underfloor space :)

so first they abandon them when covid hits, now they want them back?

Farmers use backpackers as a way to pay below minimum wage.

Australia just gave citizenship to a nice white family from Italy who came here on a working holiday visa..... while brown people have been imprisoned for 10 years.....in deplorable conditions........ having committed not a single crime!

SEEKING ASYLUM IS NOT FUCKING ILLEGAL!

kids who were born here are set to be deported back to the shit fuckery their family ran from.

Don't even start me on how our government treats our first people..... i'll just say distain.

It's pathetic

I'm sorry but i find it extremely difficult to be proud to be an Australian

Canadians are very apologetic and are likely to have profusely apologized for fucking her over. That doesn't mean they didn't enjoy it or that they would not do it again to the next victim.

Canadians will apologize for not apologizing enough.

Everything Canadians say must be a random selection from a pile of thoughts in their head because they mostly finish every sentence with "I guess".

It's superficial. I worked with two Europeans who said they weren't nice at all and Anglo Saxon Canadians treated non-Anglos badly.

One of my Canadian-born colleagues who was of Austrian heritage really liked the expression "white nigger' when I called him that. He said the expression described his whole life in Canada.

that's shit about treatment of non-anglo's....... I wasn't aware.

I just wanted to finish a sentence with "eh?" :)

Canadian immigration officials tasered to death a Polish man in 2007.

I entered Canada 3 times to work. 1990, 2001, and 2008.

During the 2001 and 2008 entries I found the Canadian officials aggressive and hostile. I also witnessed in 2008 that they gave a US citizen a really long time, more than 1 hour, questioning and waiting at an immigration counter. It appeared as if the USA was an enemy state.

I had an encounter in 2008 with an armed Canadian Immigration cop when I went to the airport to collect my passport which they took possession of when I entered a week earlier. The door to the office was locked and I banged on the door quite forcefully. Eventually, an Immigration goon arrived wearing a gun on his hip and told me to piss off. I replied loudly and aggressively that I am not leaving without my passport. Another Immigration official heard the commotion and rushed over and told the armed cop to desist and this official then went away and returned with my passport.

I have worked in 15 countries and never experienced treatment like the Canadian immigration hostility.

Its a huge journey. I traveled from Perth to Halifax Canada via Sydney, Vancouver, and Toronto in 1991.

Flying time across Canada from East to West is 7 hours with no stops and 8+ hours with a stop. Its a horrendous journey from Perth to Halifax by the routes the airlines demand you travel. I researched whether ravel in the opposite direction Halifax-London (or other European capital)- was available and couldn't find anything rational when I was last in Halifax in 1991.
