Explosion: Mortlake gas-fired power station blackout threat

Six+ months to repair means that it may not be repaired in time for the coming summer.

A massive explosion has wrecked a major gas generator and it could take more than six months to repair it.

Fire crews were called to Origin’s Mortlake Power Station yesterday morning after an electrical fault caused the explosion.

A long-term outage could cause issues for Victoria’s electricity supply.

CFA commander Paul Marshall said there was “significant damage” to one of the two generating units, and that staff had suggested it could take at least six months to get it back online.

“It was a rather large explosion, it certainly wasn’t a minor explosion, so that will obviously take a while to rectify,” he told 3AW this morning.

Mortlake is the largest gas-fired power station in Victoria, with both units generating 292 megawatts.

An Origin spokeswoman said the electrical fault activated the generator’s fire detection system, and that CFA crews were on site for more than two hours.

“Origin is undertaking an investigation to determine when the unit can be returned to service,” she said.

WARNING OF GAS SHORTAGES WITHOUT BOOST

A long-term outage could cause issues for Victoria’s electricity supply at the end of the year, after multiple faults at coal-fired power stations last summer saw the power switched off to hundreds of thousands of homes during a heatwave.

where is chuck and Jules on this ?

Yes using a highly inflammable gas can cause explosions.....
Wind and solar panels don't explode or pollute the land or us. Batteries to stop intermittency and you have a non polluting non explosive (and cheaper) alternative .....

With Pt Augusta and Hazelwood shut down any incident like this will threaten electricity supply. I fear the coming summer not so much for myself as my (then) 99 yo mother.

Then some cunt will shut down one of his coal fired power stations “for maintenance” in the middle of summer—and all the generators will laugh and raise their prices by huge amounts. This profiteering has been happening for quite a while and Libs do nothing about it. Idiots say SA has the highest power prices—that is due to the coal part of the grid. ATM, in winter, we have the cheapest electricity in Australia. If only we could store months of it!
