Used to be it was young men committing suicide, now it is both sexes? What is going on?

What i've got my eye on over recent times with a keen anticipation of the future is the use of psychotropics in the treatment of mental health illness.

MDMA, for instance, in clinical trial has been found in significantly high percentages of the control studies to provide up to 3 month cessation of symptoms from PTSD from a single dose.

No other drugs work on PTSD. You may get lucky and find something for the depression ... you can manage the anxiety to a degree ... but there's a whole lot more going on than that.

One dose. Three months.

You once had a refuge when you got home, or rather I should say that most people had a refuge when they got home. But these days with smart phones etc it not only follows you home, but your stuck with it on the train, bus, at your mates place, at school, at work ..... everywhere, even on the crapper. There is almost no escape from it unless you want to make yourself a recluse, and for most youngsters (damn, i sound like an old man) that's not really an option.

As you are a taciturn man with considerable inclination towards being morally and ethically outrageous, i could run a few paths on what you are actually floating here.

I'm choosing to be optimistic and going with you speculating that young women are feeling pressures previously reserved for young men, resultant from career equality.

I contest that. For a great many reasons.

Pertinent to this issue though is method. Women and girls have always attempted suicide in comparable rates to men and boys, it's just that the men and boys tend to employ more violent, irredeemable methods, like gun shot, hanging, etc.

Women and girls tend to overdoses and self-harm. In other words, open to intervention.

What this study suggests to me is that young women are opting for more 'final' methods.

To some extent whoever it was said “equality” is right. Work stress, work-life balance stress, money problems etc, not forgetting that in couples even if the female works fulltime she still does most of the housework. Is it really a wonder that females are stressed, some to the point of suicide?

I am not making cheap points about everybody wanting all the latest stuff. People who have a mobile phone can be contacted by their boss all the time, ditto for laptop. Used to be, you signed off work and that was work done for the day. Phone and laptop are required by work these days.

I think the zooming price of houses over so long a time period has just ratcheted up the stress of modern life.
