The ABC brouhaha

Three articles today about the brouhaha at the ABC:

Bevan Shields reports that Neil Brown, a minister in the Fraser government and a deputy Liberal leader under John Howard, also launched a stinging attack on Mitch Fifield, accusing the Communications Minister of “making a fool of himself” by repeatedly ignoring advice from the panel. This is rather explosive.

And Fairfax reveals that it was former ABC chairman Jim Spiegelman who was advising Michelle Guthrie on her 11-page insurance policy which ended Justin Milne’s reign as ABC chairman.

Aaron Patrick writes that Emma Alberici stands tall at ABC as Michelle Guthrie and Justin Milne tumble.

That should keep you busy!

Just HM cronies did turdfull place in key positions anyway? We know the NBN board and senior management was, we now know the ABC was. Just what other cronies have been put where? To what purpose? Sounds a lot like corruption to me!

Morrison Says He’ll Keep Close Tabs On ABC To Ensure No Further Political Interference

Prime Minister Scott Morrison says the ABC should be free from political meddling and announced that he’ll be having regular conversations with the board to ensure independence.

“What we’ve seen over the past week is that the independence of the ABC has been compromised. If they can’t sort it out, I’ll have to do it for them,” Mr Morrison said.

The PM used an interview on the ABC yesterday to reprimand the broadcaster for failing to uphold its independence from politicians, and provided a list of ways it should improve.

“The idea that our national broadcaster has been taking direction from Prime Ministers is shameful. I’ll be talking with the board today to tell them exactly what that should do about it,” he told the ABC.

Mike Seccombe goes into how the stacking of the ABC board has been with us for a long time. It comes down to the question he cannot bring himself to answer.

In a long contribution Jane Cadzow tells us about the civil war waging within the ABC before the poop hit the fan.

Demands for a change in top-level decision-making at the ABC include the idea of replacing the governing Board — calling for better public scrutiny of that generally off-the-record body. Media editor Lee Duffield says asking the Board what it knew about machinations between the now departed Chairman and Managing Director is a logical follow-up to crisis in the organisation.

Bring back the staff-elected board member! Libs got rid of this early—only cronies to be on boards! Labor is going to have to sack a lot of boards/top management. E.g. the NBN board is full of turdfull cronies as is the top layer of management there. A real problem. The Libs are no longer interested in democracy.

they need to distance politicians from anything to do with the abc.

It should also be mandatory that any request by a politician to the abc, be it in writing, phone call or a whisper in a public toilet block (thinking of pyne here) to it's board, it's producers, janitors or any of it's staff be made public, in full, as soon as they the politician tries it on.

I suspect she'll win. I'd imagine that being sacked because of political interference won't sit well with the fair work commission, even if they are a bunch of paid liberal stooges
