Trump appears to forget lyrics to 'God Bless America' at his Celebration of America event
President hosts event to 'honour our great country and pay tribute to the heroes who fight to protect it'

President Donald Trump appeared unable to remember the words to “God Bless America” at his Celebration of America event, which he had staged after accusing American athletes of being unpatriotic.

The president sang along to the first several words of the classic American tune on Tuesday, as the US Marine Band and US Army Chorus performed it behind him on the White House lawn. When the performers reached the words "to the oceans white with foam,” however, Mr Trump stopped singing, simply nodding his head along to the beat.

The event was originally scheduled to be a celebration of the Philadelphia Eagles, who won this year’s NFL Super Bowl. The White House uninvited the team, however, after several members said they would not be attending.

Mr Trump later claimed the Eagles players had dropped out of the event because of his own opposition to “taking a knee” – a popular form of protest in the NFL that involves kneeling during the national anthem.

“[The Eagles] disagree with their President because he insists that they proudly stand for the National Anthem, hand on heart, in honour of the great men and women of our military and the people of our country,” Mr Trump said in a statement. “The Eagles wanted to send a smaller delegation, but the 1,000 fans planning to attend the event deserve better.”

Instead, Mr Trump announced, the White House would host an event to “honour our great country, pay tribute to the heroes who fight to protect it, and loudly and proudly play the National Anthem”.

The president spoke for approximately four minutes at the event, according to pool reports, claiming the day’s turnout was “even bigger than we had anticipated”.

“We love our country. We respect our flag. We always proudly stand for the National Anthem,” he said, before joining the military bands in their rendition of “God Bless America”.

And in other news:

Donald Trump claims he has 'absolute right to pardon myself'

In his latest broadside against the Russia investigation, Donald Trump claimed on Monday to have an “absolute right to pardon myself”. The president added: “But why would I do that when I have done nothing wrong?”

White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders, however, later told reporters “no one is above the law”.

The president’s remarks came in tweets in which he said his right to pardon had been “stated by numerous legal scholars”. Last year, he had said he had the “complete power to pardon”.

The question has never been decided by the courts but, in a non-binding opinion written in 1974, the justice department’s Office of Legal Counsel determined that a president cannot pardon himself, under the principle that “no one may be a judge in his own case”.

At Monday’s White House briefing, Sanders dodged questions about whether Trump had the right to pardon himself.

“Thankfully the president hasn’t done anything wrong and wouldn’t have any need for a pardon,” she said.

Asked if Trump believed the founding fathers envisioned the president having the power to pardon himself and thus being “above the law”, Sanders said: “Certainly the constitution very clearly lays out the law and the president hasn’t done anything wrong, so we feel very comfortable on the front.”

She added, after a follow up question: “Certainly no one is above the law.”

Trump was renewing attacks on the special counsel, Robert Mueller, and his investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election and allegations of collusion with the Trump campaign.

The president’s lawyer, Rudy Giuliani, suggested in television interviews on Sunday that Trump might have the authority to pardon himself but would be unwise to use it. Giuliani told NBC’s Meet the Press: “Pardoning himself would be unthinkable and probably lead to immediate impeachment.”

He added: “He has no need to do it, he’s done nothing wrong.”

Giuliani said he would be “willing to sit down with Mueller and argue it out if he has an open mind to it”. The former New York mayor and mob prosecutor has taken a leading role in defending Trump, sometimes making conflicting statements.

Last Thursday, Trump said he was considering pardoning Martha Stewart, the home decorating mogul who served five months in prison for obstructing justice and similar charges as part of a 2004 insider trading investigation, and the former Illinois governor Rod Blagojevich.

Trump is unfortunately, turning into a legend.!

Oh yeah that freaks me out. That he has managed to retain his position despite his outrageous behaviour for this long says volumes. about the artificiality of the whole American dream.! Reality doesn't seem to impinge on the consciousness of the average citizen of the USA. :OMG :WTF :jump

As a friend of mine said about him recently: "He defies gravity".

'I could shoot somebody and I wouldn’t lose any voters'

This is true.

He has not one single redeeming feature.

He's a self-centered liar, who cares about nobody but himself.

Despite this, his supporters would still defend him even if he did murder someone.

It takes a very special type of stupid to be a Trump supporter.

Do you disagree?

Can you perhaps name one redeeming feature he has?

And, are you suggesting that he doesn't lie?

I did once hear a story once that his limo broke down out in the sticks, and older couple pulled over and gave him a lift to civilisation, so as a thank you and unbeknownst to them, he paid off their mortgage ... that was a positive

however since seeing his form during the presidential campaign and since, I'm inclined to believe that was another of his bullshit stories
