A case for a new State: Northern Australia

Postby HBS Guy » 12 Nov 2017, 11:39

Take north Queensland—where is the southern border of that? And continue it across to the western border of the NT. The southern bit of NT can be given to SA. Maybe take the northern bit of WA? Can’t see the WA govt and people agreeing to that!

SE Queenland no longer has to look after the northern bit. The new State has no excuses. Win-win.

The border can be defined by how far South and West straight bananas can grow.

Rockhampton would be a good place to draw the border: the Tropic of Capricorn passes through it.

Lived in the territory for a time as well as up on the cape.
Imo its not feasible.
Territory is more s.a than it will ever be qld and i doubt any Queenslander particularly wants to be a territoryan.
Sure it looks good on paper...most ideas for up north designed down south do but paper isn't people and thats what your dealing with.

Well, it isn’t particularly my idea, it gets mentioned from time to time. Just wondered what BigOle would think of it.

yeah, nah

The Territory is its own entity and we are too far from WA to have any real connection with them, if they want separation let them do it under their own steam.

We want our own state of North Queensland not just to 'cut free' from the south.

There is no cultural connection between Nth QLD / the NT or Nth WA, so making us one state wouldn't work too well.

This is what we want and sooner or later we will get what we want. :beer :beer

I have lived in the NT for a few years and I agree, I will never be a Territorian and I fine with that.

They can be their own state if they want, nothing stopping them.

We are our own people, we want our own state.

Darwin would make a fine capital city for North Australia.

Of the three main cities in the north you think the one half the size of the other two would be the way to go?

How about using the most populous of the three?

Or even better not making the north of the country one big state.

I disagree.

Darwin and surrounding areas are the countries wealth in gas exports.

It is also a key military base.

It is also. ...a wonderful city

Cairns is much the same. ...only neglected very poorly by both state and federal government
. Too be fair cairns has a new base hospital built. ...but no money to run it

I have no idea why ppl travel o s b4 they visit the northern parts of Australia.

Bugger . I'm feeling homesick again :nah

Which is the biggest city then?

Darwin should be the port.

Darwin is the biggest because its had government funding.

Cairns is equally as important and just as beautiful but is utterly rejected in government support.

The northern territory belonged to South Australia at Federation, until the SA government gave it up.

This was a mistake.

NT rightfully belongs to SA. It should be returned under the jurisdiction of SA.

SA can’t afford to carry the NT, let the Feds do it.

Say the Feds say: OK, referendum for new state, northQld + north NT, south NT goes back to SA. Would you take it? Good big state!

Take South Australia north of Port Augusta, NSW west of Bourke, Queensland west of Longreach, Northern Territory south of Katherine and Western Australia north of Geraldton, incorporate it as one giant state and call it "Apocalyptic Wastelands".
