Something seems to be going on in the Timor Sea. A search and rescue aircraft from Darwin has been flying backwards and forwards over the same area for quite a while and now patrol boat HMAS Maryborough is on the scene.

Boat news
Yesterday, from Gordon Thomson on Christmas Island.

State Secret#12 Today 8:30 Christmas Island time 55 children, women, men landed. First boat at CI since 30 Sept.— gordonthomsonci (@gordonthomsonci) October 12, 2013

This explains why HMAS Warramunga was at Christmas Island yesterday. These people are most likely those who arrived at the Cocos Islands the other day. The timing is right, they were to be taken to Christmas Island for processing.

Morrison said they will be sent back home. He might have a problem with that. The UN says doing this could be a breach of the refugee Convention.
http://www.smh.com.au/federal-politics/ ... 2ve20.html

Other acts of bastardry we won’t be hearing about in Morrison’s next briefing -
Abbott’s ‘no exemptions’ policy means pregnant women have been sent to Nauru for the first time since 2004. Remember – ‘We did it before and we can d it again’. One woman is expecting twins, she is six months pregnant and will have to give birth on the island. Morrison says conditions at the island’s hospital, partly destryoed by fire three months ago – are more than OK. There are fears for the mother’s health before and after the birth and for the safety of the babies – not during the birth, but afterwards. When they leave hospital they will be living in a tent in possible 50 degree heat.
http://mobile.abc.net.au/news/2013-10-1 ... ru/5018466

More, with information on concerns about Abbott’s accelerated health checks policy.
http://www.smh.com.au/federal-politics/ ... 2uyv0.html

And – seven asylum seekers from West Papua have been sent to a refugee camp in PNG, dangerously close to the place they fled from, after our government refused to consider their asylum claims.
http://www.rnzi.com/pages/news.php?op=read&id=79773

We might have slowed the drownings at sea, temporarily, but Abbott’s nasty policies are going to have other consequences. We could end up dealing with deaths in camps and outbreaks of disease, all preventable with a bit of common sense.

Boatwatch
It seems the navy is expecting some sort of asylum seeker boat influx.

@gordonthomsonci reported last night that the Navy was out in force around Christmas Island. HMAS Warramunga has just shown up on the Maritime Traffic site heading north from Christmas Island. It probably won’t be visible for very long.
http://www.marinetraffic.com/ais/defaul ... level1=140

Hmas Woolongong and ACV’s Corio Bay, Arnham Bay and Cape St. George were all moored in Darwin Harbour overnight. It appears HMAS Warramunga, Ballarat and Armidale along with ACV Triton are currently at Christmas Island although they do not show up on the Marine Traffic site

Morrison is an absolute cunt in the way only Christians can be:

A second pregnant woman is being held in immigration detention on Nauru, the UNHCR has confirmed to Guardian Australia.

The woman, of Rohingya descent, is thought to be about 30 years old and is seven months pregnant with twins, according to UNHCR and other sources who did not want to be identified.

The woman told representatives from the UN refugee body, on an official visit to Nauru last week, that she was also diagnosed with diabetes, meaning the pregnancy is high-risk. She has two young children and is being held in regional processing centre 3, along with her husband and family. Regional processing centre 3 is the family unit which comprises three marquee tents.

http://www.theguardian.com/world/2013/o ... th-concern

The heat in a tent or tin shack is likely to cause harm to the babies born on Nauru. What harm to send them to Darwin to have their babies and for 6 months afterwards say, then return them to wherever.

More cuntery:
The Abbott government has barred Victoria’s commissioner for children from visiting vulnerable minors in a detention centre…………………………………
………..a spokesman for Immigration Minister Scott Morrison said Mr Geary had no jurisdiction in relation to Commonwealth detention, and his approval to visit the centre was provided on the basis that he accompany National Children’s Commissioner Megan Mitchell. He said Ms Mitchell decided not to visit.

Another 60 asylum seekers have arrived at Christmas Island in defiance of the government’s tough new border protection measures.

Fairfax Media photographs show a boat carrying men, women and children who appear to be of Middle Eastern and African descent arriving at the island on Thursday

The Australian government is rounding up pregnant women in immigration detention facilities and sending them to Nauru, according to Global Mail sources.

It is understood that at least seven pregnant women were transferred to the Pacific island on October 18, with more due for relocation the day after.

Sources say that most of the women transferred today are Vietnamese. It is unclear whether their families travelled with them.

The Global Mail also understands that the Department of Immigration and Border Protection is collecting the names of all pregnant women in immigration facilities across Australia. Immigration minister Scott Morrison did not reply to phone calls and emails asking for details and explanation; the department referred all questions to the minister.

Rudd's PNG Solution was beginning to work, but Abbott is taking the credit for the results. Many Australians were getting worried about so many refugees arriving on our shores, but I doubt whether the majority will tolerate the total lack of compassion an Abbott government has for the vulnerable. This hardline stance on the desperate - and Workchoices, is why Howard lost his seat.

What sort of deal has Abbott made with Indonesia? It has to be costly because the Indonesians don't want the asylum seekers either.

A pregnant woman doesn't flee from a country where she's safe. These two women would have to be very desperate and allowing them to have their babies somewhere safe would be no great imposition on this country.

I remember when Howard sent a pregnant woman back to China. She was having her second child and knew that she couldn't have it there. The baby disappeared after it was born and who would know what happened to it.

Under any Liberal government - state or Federal, we become a ruthless country where only the wealthy and the strong can thrive comfortably.

More like a dozen women now, mantra. And the reborn Christian scumbag is scouring Australia for more. No reason for it either—being born in Australia to non–Australian parents does not make you an australian citizen. The women should be able to give birth in Darwin hospital. Have I ever mentioned I hate Christians?

Abbott hasn’t made any deal—he couldn’t negotiate his way out of a paper bag and Mesma is no better!

That Chinese woman was forcibly aborted at 7 months on arrival in China. Not our finest hour.

Very recent info from Nauru:

Just landed another asylum seeker transfer plane at #Nauru international airport.— Clint. Deidenang (@clintd22) October 19, 2013

Another asylum seeker families seen disembark from transfer plane. Men women and children board bus now leaves tarmac heads to RPC3. #Nauru— Clint. Deidenang (@clintd22) October 19, 2013

An unconfirmed number of asylum seekers are to board the return flight transfer plane leaving #Nauru. Destination unknown.— Clint. Deidenang (@clintd22) October 19, 2013

Confirmed on Thursday 17 one of the pregnant asylum seeker was transfered to an unknown hospital to #Australia from #Nauru.— Clint. Deidenang (@clintd22) October 19, 2013

So That Bastard Morrison wasn’t lying yesterday when he said there was no pregnant woman on Nauru. She’s already been taken away. He just didn’t bother telling us that at yesterday’s briefing because it’s just another of the things we are not allowed to know. If Morrison can break his ‘no exceptions’ rule on medical grounds why can’t we be told that? And why is he sending more pregnant women to Nauru?

I encourage all here to join Twitter, keep up to date with info sent from various places that this idiotic, shambolic govt will try to hide so we don’t see how authoritarian, erratic and incompetent they are.

It would be so much cheaper and safer to have the babies here. We have to supply doctors and specialists on Nauru and that would be costing a fortune. We'll have to wait until a few babies die from tropical diseases - maybe then public opinion will become more vocal and influential.

While we’ve been looking at Abbott’s latest stunt a few things slipped under the radar.
First – the return of another failed Howard era policy -

Tony Abbott wants to charge people smugglers $240 a day for staying in Australia’s detention centres
http://www.couriermail.com.au/news/quee ... 6743119011

And next, this interesting news from the UK – Serco operates detention centres, gaols and other stuff here for the federal and state governments. I’m sure they will all be thrilled to see this.

From Archie who tabulates boat arrivals:

A huge slap in the face has been given to Herr ÜberGrossenFührer Morrison by the Indonesian Government.

On Wednesday he went to to meet Mr Djoko, Minister for security, politics and law, the chairman of Indonesia’s people smuggling taskforce, and the man who must agree to any new policy direction. Mr Djoko was “called away to another event by president Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono”. Indonesian army commander, General Moeldoko. was also “unable to attend the meeting” and sent instead his chief of staff for general affairs, Boy Syahrial.

The meeting was chaired by justice and human rights minister Amir Syamsuddin who last week had said,”Australia should pay more attention’ to the countries of origin of asylum seekers in searching for a solution, and be kinder towards refugees. The Australian government should pay more empathy to the position of the Indonesian government, who is not comfortable with having so many asylum seekers here, but also to show empathy with asylum seekers who are seeking to have a better future.”

While the MSM is trying to put a nice spin on the event, the wording used by the Indonesians is telling. An “offer” to “maximise our navy patrols in the south sea, because normally we don’t have that many ships there, because there has been no threat from the south” beomes a” promise” just a few lines later. The person who will make the decisions, General Moeldoko, was one of those “Unable to attend the meeting.”

Australia has been seriously dissed by its Northern neighbour!

In a very real sense, Tony Abbott is a prisoner of history, and his vaulting ambition to refashion a new and productive relationship with the Asian giant on Australia’s northern doorstep had to break out of the historical paradigm. Instead, he has stumbled at the first very first hurdle.

There is not much room for Tony Abbott to manoeuvre now in a policy sense. Australia has been to shown to be what it always was: a willing acolyte of the big boys in the northern hemisphere rather than a genuine team player in the region. Diplomatic reassurances that the two positions are not contradictory will be met with wry smiles in the neighbourhood.

And the boats? Given the weight of evidence of high-level involvement in people-smuggling in Indonesia, only decisive action against powerful figures from Jakarta could address this. It is now highly unlikely that the political will to act is there in the wake of revelations about Australia’s double game.

Stopping the boats was never going to be that easy.

ABC boosted this article on Twitter. I posted back wtte that the carnage that a far from ready LNP led by Tony Abbott would wreak could have been foreseen by a child and that the ABC failed by not pointing this out. Despise fucking journos now writing stuff faintly praising of the former govt and faintly damning the present mob when they should be raging against the lack of information the new govt is releasing. Here is an Indonesian account of the boat stand-off. It’s a bit different to what Morrison is saying. For example, we were told last night that the asylum seeker boat was picked up in Indonesian waters. The Indonesians say it wasn’t. Morrison says there is no stand-off. The Indonesians say there is.

http://www.mysinchew.com/node/93576

For anyone who can be bothered – Morrison gave another briefing today, notable only for one thing. Our Stepford robot three-star seemed to malfunction and kept repeating the same line over and over until Morrison stepped in, no doubt to distract the media pack, such as it was, while someone surreptitiously flicked a switch on the three-star’s back. It’s worth watching the video just for the comedy.
