Your 10 favourite albums

Postby mothra » 10 Mar 2019, 00:14

I know this is nigh on impossible but were i to go to a desert island with a turntable and 10 albums to accompany me, i'd pick (well, in current mood aat least):

1 - Nirvana - Bleach

2 - The Strokes - Is This it?

3 - Beatles - The White Album

4 - PJ Harvey - Dry

5 - The White Stripes - Elephant

6 - Pink Floyd - Pipers At the Gates of Dawn

7 - Led Zeppelin - Physical Graffiti

8 - Pixies - Surfer Rosa

9 - Tom Waits - Rain Dogs

10 - Bob Dylan - Highway 61 Revisited

But i reserve the right to change my mind tomorrow. And then again the next day.

See? I already forgot the Velvet Underground with Nico . damnit. That's got to be in there.

And Janis Joplin - Pearl.

Right, i'm taking 12 to the desert island.

yeah M that is a huge ask.

I could add many to your list, and subtract others.

In fact it is impossible. Triple J have the right idea,, but it should be top one hundred albums.

THEN, you might get a look in. 'Cos I couldn't choose. :bgrin

I know, Pink. I was bored and stuff.

Arctic Monkeys - Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not

Carol King - Tapestry

Maybe i should just scrap the thread.

I'd definitely include Tapestry.
And Janis.
Also Harvest.

Then I have to go Brit.

And then it becomes impossible.

I'm up to 15 already. And there's a few artists i've listed that could offer me several off their catalogue and i'd be happy on the desert island.

Really hard picking one for Dylan, for example.

The one you mentioned earlier?
Whatever.. I only ever bought one Dylan album... Blood on the Tracks.

I was more into psychedelia than folk , then.

Trying to pick just one Pink Floyd album is impossible. Perhaps we could have the top 20 albums in 10 designated genres.? :roll :bgrin

Dave Brubeck “Last time I saw Paris” (or, rather the album containing that piece.)
Louis Armstrong, some of his early work

Giacoma Rossini, “William Tell” and “Barber of Seville”

Mozart “The Magic Flute” and some symphonies/concertos etc

Beethoven Symphonies 3 and 5

Handel “The Messiah” The Halleluja chorus always sends goosepimples down my spine

Gilbert and Sullivan “Ruddigore” and “Yeomen of the Guard” and “Pirates of Penzance” Because sometimes you want something light and I do enjoy a G&S operetta.

An album of rugby songs too, why not?

To keep in the 12 albums the longer works could be represented by an album of highlights etc.

I forgot Mendelson “Fingal’s Cave” and Verdi etc etc. Some etudes etc by Chopin to soothe the soul. Hard to choose!

I first encountered Dylan in the late '80s, through my then boyfriend, who also introduced me to Pink Floyd. I love Dylan up until he went bananas Christian and Blood On the Tracks is the first album (a cassette) i ever bought of his. How good is Tangled Up In Blue?

As to the one Floyd album ... it's got to be Piper's for me, although i love them all fiercely. Syd Barrett just blew my mind.

Apparently, Syd walked in on Floyd recording in studio one day, completely unrecognisable. He was massively overweight and bald . and just sat there.

According to the story, Roger Waters went up to him and said "Syd? What happened?"

To which Syd replied "Chops. I've been eating a lot of chops".

Dunno how true it iws but it cracks me right up.

I missed Bowie! Well, up to 16.

And Temple of the Dog were outstanding. "I don't mind stealing bread, out of the mouths of decadence".

Chris Cornell and Eddie Vedder .. total pants party material.

Yes..indeed. Interstellar Overdrive.. nah see I was into Floyd, back in the 70's. I absolutely loved Atom Heart Mother, MEDDLE..
UmmaGumma, Relics..etc …
then we have of corse Dark Side of The Moon, Wish You were Here, Animals.... :bgrin

and never really heard Dylan until later. Or much since, to be honest. Not to say anything negative, just too much else to listen to, then.

Tangled up in Blue. Yes I can hear it now. I had it on Vinyl. I don't have it anymore.

Boston - Boston

Boston - Don't Look Back

The Guess Who - The Greatest of the Guess Who

Kansas - The Best of Kansas

Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin II

Metallica - Master of Puppets

Queensryche - Operation Mindcrime

Three Dog Night - Best of Three Dog Night

Triumph - Classics

ZZ Top Deguello

Bach - Toccata and Fugue in D minor

Joe Satriani - Surfing With the Alien

As a nod to Australia, I also like The Little River Band.

Boston were not a band that really made it to Australia. At least not in my recollection.

Can you give us a youtube of one of your faves from them?

My absolute favorite of theirs from 1976.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SSR6ZzjDZ94

From their second album in 1978

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k01ENkWk9LM

Both albums were recorded in Tom Sholz's basement. He designed and built his own guitar amplifiers when he wasn't designing the first auto focusing cameras for Polaroid. Tom played and recorded all instruments for the entire albums, except maybe some of the drums. He played all guitars, base guitar, and organ. He then got Brad Delp to sing all of the vocal tracks, lead and harmony. They walked into a record company and sold them the best selling album ever in America. Michael Jackson's Thriller passed it for a while, but Boston has continued to sell albums over 40 years after it was recorded.

Sounds like a loose BM.

You have Kevin Wilson, but Texas has Rodney Carrington.

Chunky Custard is or was a band that played in pubs. I doubt they were much good but I never voluntarily listen to pop music (rock, blues, C&W (ESPECIALLY C&W) pop, hip hop etc etc.

But the name is striking, no?

Boston were huge in Australia (on the radio), but not sure if they ever toured here.

You can still hear this song on the radio, every single day of the year:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SSR6ZzjDZ94

Tom Scholz - the guitarist - revolutionized guitar playing when he invented the 'Rockman', a small Walkman sized headphone practice amp with built in effects.

Oh i know that song. You;re right, that's huge.

I've never really listened to commercial radio so there are huge gaps in my knowledge of mainstream music ... but that one's on ads and stuff.
