Cleaver Greene's maiden speech

Postby mothra » 20 Aug 2018, 12:58

Anyone watch Rake last night?

I was pretty excited about Cleaver heading off to Canberra but even in my wildest dreams i didn't envisage that maiden speech.

Pure gold!

I saw it.

Loved the nude scene “little boys and their bouncy balls.”

Richard Roxburgh said in an interview with Andrew Denton that men love Cleaver because he's, by virtue of ageing disgracefully, raging against the dying of the light.

Women, on the other hand, just enjoy him being subjected to the inevitable consequences of his actions.

Then there's me, hopelessly in love with him and highly disturbed by what that signifies about myself.

I think men might like him because he gets away with so much—doesn’t pay any tax, child maintenance etc etc. Of course—he pays in a different way, the empty life of a rake.

I think he gets his arse kicked repeatedly ... he's just, fortunately for him, loved enough by a core group of people to stay alive and out of prison.

Thing is...he is hopelessly 'successful' enough to get out of not so serious hilarious shit because he is also intelligent. Still, he slips up....like ranting at the neighbour's kids naked but he is completely and blissfully unaware of that fact.

And leaves a field of casualties in his wake.

And the ep ends with the neighbor screaming at Cleaver to get his party to stop. Poetic justice.

Poor GG ... lol.

Yeas. There he was having his own private smart arse dig at the Jewish GG and the end result is that the GG loses his job....even though Rake had SFA to do with it...other than to ask a private question, made public by yet another political arsehole.

I like the developing characters.....his driver, and that bloke engaged as the media rep who just happens to be the brother of some fellow Rake owes a couple grand to. Think he is to replace the so far missing 'Barny' character who is off chasing some Italian Widow at the expense of Rake's loyal Secretary....now Chief of Staff.

Dunno what the need for that terrorist attack was. That has to be deliberate and likely to be the base of some theme the programme will build on while Rake searches for something he can do to save Australia......beyond looking after the Yank Sec/General.

That'd be hilarious and conflict the fuck out of him. The other new character which got a bit of airplay was that Kiwi dick....the very important Boss of the 'Museum.' Lots of potential all over the cast.

Jane Turner as the wannabe Pauline Hanson will be deeply funny ... and William McInnis as the homeland security guy. Anthony LaPaglia was just a joy to watch ... with his amazing phone. Was it Sue? I can't remember.

This season has so much potential.

Last night was not up to the opening episode. The driver is getting more and more interesting. The Kiwi Museum Boss still there but very briefly.

I watched the very first episode of Rake yesterday - season 1, episode 1 - on Stan (they have 4 seasons).

I haven't read any posts in this thread, because the title is already a bit of a spoiler :sad

Oh well, I guess that's my fault for coming to the series so late :bgrin

Seems like an okay show - I'll watch another episode tonight.

It takes a couple episodes before you see how he is a rake and how self destructive that is.
