world cup

Postby johnsmith » 02 Jun 2018, 09:19

In a warm up to the world cup, Australia beat the Czech Republic 4 - 0, in what was a pretty good performance

A good sign heading into world cup . Whilst the Czechs aren't a soccer superpower, they're not slouches either. Well done to the Aussies

We will never be a “soccer superpower” because our stars have to leave to play in England.

Need a league closer by. NZ is hopeless I guess? All thugby. PNG? Then Indo, East Timor and Malaysia.

Could it happen? If Japan had a team then our guys have a fierce competitor to play against, learn from etc.

Holland has a cricket team. Pretty fucking hopeless ATM but enough Tests, bit of home support could improve.

Listen to me pontificate about elite sport, spectator sport. Yuck! Only game I would ever voluntarily watch is soccer.

That our players are in the european league is what makes us competitive.

'Super power' I agree, it won't happen. But as long as we can hold our own I'll be happy.

It's growing. Our leagues are making the telly now, and the news. We will never be able to compete with the salaries offered in Europe so we'll always lose most of our best but with soccer so popular amongst school kids, we'll have loads of fresh talent for the future.

I'm with you though, only sport i can stand watching. So far outclasses thugball.

Yeah, at the top levels you see some really elegant play.

Reminds me of chess sometimes King (player) + pawn (ball) against King (goal keeper) or against King + Knight (defender) and so pretty when the player weaves his way through and scores.

The US is a growing cricket and soccer player.

Mums prefer junior to play soccer not gridiron (most boring game in the world!) and cricket too is gaining popularity—think they are bored of baseball.

pragmatism always wins over ideology

our players are going overseas. We just can't compete. They make more in one game in Europe than in a full season here.

It's not all bad though, the kids still look up to them

Go Australia

and who's the fuckwit on ozpol who the other week started a thread deriding soccer? I bet he supports that aerial ping pong instead.

the world cup attracts more viewers than the olympic games. Tell him to stick that in his pipe and smoke it

Boy, did France miss a golden chance—Aust. goal keeper well out of his goal!

Still, 2-1 not a bad score.

they played OK. Lots of room for improvement. Not enough attack in my opinion.

Still to hold a $1B euro team down to a 2:1 loss is pretty good. I think the Aussie team will be happy with it. The French media on the other hand will lambast the French team.

And I don't agree with France's first penalty. I still say he touched the ball.

France’s Hernandez Cleared To Play Next Game Despite Sustaining 11 Separate Concussions

In what has been described as a miracle recovery, France’s Lucas Hernandez will line up against Peru next week despite suffering from 11 concussions and a broken leg in the game against Australia.

Hernandez – who also sustained a spinal injury in the second half – bravely played out the game against Australia even though he broke his leg in the 11th minute, and was frequently concussed.

“It’s amazing how he gets these quite serious injuries game after game, but then seems to recover. It’s so brave,” one observer said.

Doctors are concerned for Hernandez’s safety should he come up against serious physical contact in the next game. “If he is actually pushed or elbowed, there are concerns he might die,” one medical professional said.
