what the fuck are handles? haven't come across that one before.

They use that term in New Zealand.

First time I went there, I asked for a middy.

The barmaid just laughed and said, "you Aussie's need to get used to asking for 'handles' around here and then everything will be sweet as".

Really?

I haven't come across it much in Australia.

Europe uses it, in some places.

I just noticed this on the SBS website:

"Season 1 expiring 30 June 2018."

Seriously, don't miss it.

I watched the first episode this afternoon.

Was good!

Is that the young Gilmore Girl I see, under one of those white bonnets?

She has quite the story arc ... and does a very good job of it.

The acting all over is excellent.

Ep 4.

One laugh, one handmaid saying to Offred “Don’t apologise, they like to be forgiving” and I thought of Booby always forgiving but never ever apologising.

“Aunt” Lydia pressing the cattle prod in Offred’s face for so long—reminded me of the nuns whaling into us boys. Way too much.

Saw the dispossession of women’s property and the firing of all the women.

That “army” described in the book looks more like a bunch of thugs with submachine guns to me. No problem killing unarmed protestors in the name of religion. Only abortion is murder.

I read a really interesting interview with the woman who plays Aunt Lydia recently. She said she plays her as really and truly loving the Handmaids and believing what she was doing was in their best interests.

Until then i just loathed her. I've been watching with that in mind though and i must say, it's interesting.

An extension of the old "spare the rod, spoil the child" adage i expect.

I know what you mean though, it's not love as i know it. I've never raised a finger to either of my children.

Love, zeal, sexual frustration (in the case of the nuns.)

Love the child, love the religion, not both.

Astonishingly so. And. as you know having read the book, blatantly hypocritical all over the place.

I think a significant number of people go through life having absolutely no idea what love actually is.

Many of these people are devoutly religious.

Have to return the book Tue. Will borrow it again later—is in high demand right now.

Would buy it but then I have to schlep it and another thousand books to Tassie eventually.

That “other army” tho, the Angels (!) not as I envisaged it—no uniform.

Religion as substitute for some quality, as you say, often love.

It never ceases to amaze me that for hundreds of years, people went to their clergy for marital advice. Just amazing arrogance.

A sales rep I had didn’t want to spend some money to do a sales course. He paid nearly as much for marriage councelling from the Catholic Church! Christ! He also spent a similar amount of money fixing some damage to his car (it had been broken into.) Weird, paying to have celibates tell you how to run your married life! Not doing a course that could increase your skills and your income.

Yeah, it's crazy. As much as asking them for assistence on any inter-family dynamic. From great uncles to grandchildren. How could they have any fucking idea about it?

Best advice they could give is about a same-sex share house.

To the Commander?

He would prefer Offred’s life to be “bearable.” Something Aunt Lydia is maybe not so concerned with?
