I always took organic material as being something living or has lived.


Organic chemicals are defined as containing the carbon atom. So CO2 and CO are organic chemicals by definition.

But organic chemicals contains things like petroleum molecules of various sizes, alcohols, sugars etc. What would be on a stony meteorite would be carbon-hydrogen molecules, a bit like methane, maybe some nitrogen. Does not indicate there is life in space. Maybe such a meteorite falling onto a planet the organic chemicals on it could accelerate the formation of life but I doubt it, just not enough material.
