A good priest

Postby johnsmith » 30 Oct 2018, 10:10

I'm usually the first to take a shot at anyone in the church when there is a bad news story, so when I saw his story I thought the least I can do is make a comment. I'd vote for him if I were in his electorate.

Rod Bower, the billboard priest from Gosford, to run for Senate on asylum seeker, climate issues

The provocateur priest from the Central Coast, Father Rod Bower, is riding the tide of the Wentworth by-election, announcing plans on Saturday to run for the Senate as an independent candidate.

The hung parliament arising from the Wentworth poll has focused attention on the crossbenchers who will hold the balance of power in the Lower House when Parliament sits in a few weeks' time.

And the massive swing against the Liberals there has been taken by many as a warning that voters are losing patience with government inaction on key issues like climate change and asylum seekers.

Signs of the times

Father Rod Bower is best known for his politically charged billboard displays in front of his church on the New South Wales Central Coast.

They reflect his activism, particularly in support of asylum seekers, climate change action and the LGBT community.

Some of his more notable offerings include:

"The problem isn't women, it's men who rape;"

"Lest We Forget Manus and Nauru," and, notably:

"In Canberra, no-one can hear you scream."

He told 7.30 he started his sign-posting career in 2013 after delivering last rites to a man whose family kept his male partner out of the room for fear Father Rod would be judgemental.

"It really pulled me up that they could experience marginalisation because of me and because of what I represent," he said.

He went back to his church and put together the message that started it all.

Father Rod confirmed his plans to run in an address at a refugee rally in Sydney, where more than 1,000 protestors had gathered to demand the Government evacuate the children still on Nauru.

In a statement released on Saturday, he said he hoped to be one of a number of independents committed to rebuilding the "ethical framework" of the parliamentary system.

Although he is known for his advocacy of causes generally associated with the left of politics, Father Rod describes himself as a centrist.

"The political landscape has moved so far to the right that when you live in the political centre of that landscape, it appears that you are a leftist," he said.

"Well, I sort of reject that label. I'm not real keen on any labels, but I do like the centre ground of the political spectrum."

He told RN Breakfast that he was running for Senate to speak up for the marginalised and voiceless in Canberra, and that several issues in particular had driven him to make the decision, with Australia's treatment of asylum seekers high on the list.
Asylum seeker 'shame'

"I think this nation has been diminished by the policies that have lead to what's now happening on Manus and Nauru," Father Rod told RN Breakfast.

"In the Senate, I would hope to be able to encourage our politicians to adhere to our international covenants, and the refugee convention."

The priest has not spared the Opposition in his church sign advocacy, one week simply saying: "Labor's support for offshore processing is a disgrace."

He says he is relieved that Canberra seems to be slowly moving towards a viable solution for the people on Nauru and Manus, but attributes it to a "wave of public opinion" rather than an access of conscience.

"It's just a shame that it's taken this long, and this much pain and suffering for the vulnerable people on Nauru and Manus to get to this point," he told RN Breakfast.

And he warns that there is still a long way to go.

"I get a little bit disturbed when I hear the Prime Minister say 'Well, we are getting children off Nauru'," he said.

"In fact, they are opposing getting children off Nauru."

He said the Government is still opposing through the High Court the provision of proper medical and psychological care to the children on Nauru, despite urgent pleas on their behalf by medical professionals.

Climate change is another issue Father Rod has espoused.

"Our inability to have an effective climate policy has been something that's really motivated me to take this step," he told RN Breakfast.
'We see great politicians vote against their conscience'

But despite his local celebrity and goodwill, do the voters in his Gosford electorate share the concerns of those in Wentworth?

"People on the Central Coast are becoming increasingly concerned about the asylum seeker issue — also about climate issues and the general ethical framework in our Parliament," he Father Rod said.

"We seem to have lost an architecture of ethics, and I think they are the things that concern people — not only on the Central Coast, but across the nation."

Ultimately, Father Rod said, what he offers is a true non-partisan view.

"We see a lot of great politicians, really good people, who vote against their conscience because that's what the party asks of them," he said.

"I will look at legislation, take advice across a broad spectrum of advice, and I'll come to those votes without that the pressure of party politics."

good on him!

This giu is a legend isn't he? I've been following his church signs for a while ... poignant and hilarious ... my two favourite things.

I know it's hard to believe butt the church is filled with people like him. Think Father Bob. It's this stuff i was raised on.

Bloody conservatives. They bugger everything up.
