I go through different phases.

Been drinking lots of lager, but not enjoying it anymore.

I might need to switch to a Porter (???)

What a coincidence! I'm drinking a porter tonight. A local brewer ... http://longbrewing.com/

They call it "Paul's Porter". Their description from the website is very accurate, and I am thoroughly enjoying this beer.

"Intensely black with a thick tan head. Layers of dark bitter-sweet chocolate, coffee and caramel aroma and flavors supported by rich complex malts. Big rich almost chewy mouth feel. Finish has some minerality, lightly hopped with a balance toward soft malty sweetness. Little to no burnt roast, bitterness, or astringency. 6.2% alc/vol"

Looks good.

The imported Porters are quite expensive in Australia and NZ.

I might have to try the Australian product:

"James Squire's Jack of Spades Porter is more delicate than a stout with hints of malt chocolate and creamy texture. Roasted barley and wheat malts are the key, while subtle hopping and a long maturation create hints of malt chocolate, a pillowy head and a light, creamy finish. A perfect beer for those colder months and is quite simply the perfect match for a Black Forest Cake or Chocolate pudding!"

$100 a carton though.

Alcohol Volume - 9.50% :b

How big is that bottle? In American, I mean. The website says it's 330 ml. This bottle I'm drinking tonight is 1 pint, 6 oz.

That $100 carton is $4 per bottle which is not too bad unless those are just 12 oz bottles.

This one I'm drinking is from a small craft brewery, so it was rather expensive at about $12, but it is very good.

They're just over 11 ounces (small bottles, or "stubbies" as we call them here).

The average price for a carton of 24 x 330ml to 375ml bottles of beer in Australia is about $50.

Then that is pretty dang expensive - $4/bottle. I can get Deschutes Black Butte Porter, six 12 oz bottles, for about 10 dollars. Your average price is more reasonable at around $2/bottle.

I might have to take a trip back to Poland and try it there :bgrin

Beer was very cheap, the last time I visited.

And it's EVERYWHERE!

They have tiny little bottle shops on the side of the road which are open 24 hours a day.

And you can buy half litre cans of beer at roadhouses for one Euro.

I love Poland, for it's food and beer :beer

I don't know if I've reviewed this beer with you before. Don't think so, but the old man forgets sometimes ...

Breakside is a craft brewery located in Portland, Oregon. This India Pale Ale they make is available year round.

So I poured it, and whoa! Helluva head!

Took a taste and thought to myself, "Wow! Hoppy, hoppy, hoppy!"

73 IBU, 6.2%

This is a yummy, yummy beer for hop lovers. This would go well with some hearty food, like a steak or big ol' bacon blue cheese burger.

Leaves lace all over the glass as you drink it, even down at the bottom. From the website ...

"Our Flagship Beer. A Distinctive Interpretation of a Northwest Classic

Breakside’s most popular offering is this beautifully clear India Pale Ale featuring the unique character of Citra and Chinook hops. This light copper beer has huge citrus and tropical fruit aromas, with hints of perfume and pine. Flavors like apricot, guava, and orange hit the tongue accompanied by a mild evergreen note. There’s just enough caramel sweetness to balance the hop flavors, but this is really a showcase for the beautiful varieties of hops grown in the Northwest."

My unrefined palate doesn't really notice "apricot, guava, and orange", but I do notice the pine note to the flavor. Mostly, I notice a hop juice bomb, to be honest.

I sure wish I could send each one of you guys a bottle of this. Except Aussie. No offense, Aussie. This isn't for you. Trust me.

Actually, it is only beer into the US is a problem. Our customs/quarantine is fine with it.

I have sent beer to the US for a national competition—to a brewery there (Washington state) not a private address.

The 'Birdie Bottle.'

Golfers will know what it is. For those who don't....in any group of four, one is bound to have a birdie bottle..usually a large hip flask full with some sort of alcoholic drink. Whenever it is my turn to have the bottle, I fill it with a Vodka mix which I found I could down okay.

The idea is that if any in the group gets a birdie on a hole, out comes the bottle and we each fill a small (we each have one) tumbler, and have a swig.

The other three like it when the bottle is full of Schnapps (Butterscotch.) I hated the smell of it, so declined. For tomorrow, it is my turn to have the bottle full. So.....I was at Dan Murphy's to get a case of VBs and saw a Bottle of De Kuyper Schnapps (strawberry flavour) ~ made in Holland. 34 far king bucks for 700 ml. Got the bastard home, and while filling the birdie bottle for tomorrow, I thought I'd have a taste. Bleh! Farkin horse shit! Monk, how on Earth can anyone 'like' that shit........Dutch or otherwise? It has a vile bitter taste and not made even remotely bearable by a strawberry flavour.

The other three can choke on it tomorrow.

"Not happy Jan!"

Schnaps is a German drink, complain to them. I have never drunk schaps, only spirits I drink, sparingly is Bombay Gin (lemon, ice, tonic water) or St Agnes brandy, neat or in a hot lemon.

I am drinking a very nice shraz ATM, from the Southern Vales. Tomorrow will stew some pears and a quince in a glass of red and a glass of water. Lots of spices of course, cinnamon stick, cloves, star anise, grating of nutmeg. . .

Spotted this in the store and bought it.

"Hazy Little Thing IPA" by Sierra Nevada.

From the website: "Some beers need a little polishing before entering the world, while others—the hop-heavy, rowdy crowd-pleasers—should just be left alone. We package Hazy Little Thing in all its raw glory: unfiltered, unprocessed, straight from the tanks and into the can. It’s a swirling cloud that likes to shake things up, a fruit-forward hop adventure for the daring. Go bold and make tonight a hazy one."

Reminds me of Deschutes' "Fresh Haze"

Very citrusy and hoppy. Not bad! Not bad at all!

6.7%

When I brewed I racked the beer to a 20L “cube” and flung that in the fridge for a couple of weeks. Gave it time to drop yeast and clean itself upo a bit generally. Commercial brewers pasteurise then filter.

If you culture up the yeast in a Coopers Pale Ale bottle it will culture up but it will likely be a lager yeast or maybe an ale yeast designed for bottling, not the yeast Coopers used to ferment the ale. Pasteurisation and filtering remove flavor.

Seven Sheds Brewery is beer like a homebrewer does it: let the yeast settle then bottle.

I've tried out a couple of awesome beers lately.

The first was "Lights Out Stout" by Worthy Brewing out of Bend, Oregon.

Worthy stout.JPG

From their website ... "This hybridized American Stout accentuates the subtle nuances of non-traditional ingredients, such as Bob’s Red Mill Oats and milk sugar, which lend a smooth body with some residual sweetness. The whole Madagascar vanilla beans show mostly in the aroma."

And on the can ... "Hints of vanilla, coffee & nutty flavors with a smooth, creamy finish."

7.7%

I'm usually skeptical about beers out of a can, but this was very nice.

The next was "Best Coast IPA" by Ancestry Brewing, a small outfit based in Tualatin, Oregon.

Ancestry IPA.JPG

From the website ... "Powerful citrus hop aromas that fade to pine. Chocked-full of Mosaic, Citra and Cascade hops to add a juicy, West Coast hop burst."

My oh my! This one was well done! Very tasty.

7.0%, 77 IBU.
