Racing today for Caulfield Cup doesn't suggest there are any real contenders likely to go on to the Cox plate..

I gather she will go overseas to race, after the Cox Plate.
Lets face it, there is no where else for her to go. She's beaten everything thrown at her, and barring bad luck, she'll win her third Cox Plate next Saturday. :rose :rose :smitten :smitten

Unless she misses the start and gets badly boxed in she should win it.

Matey?? she'll win even then. All she has to do is get to the stalls, and get onto the track.. a truly outstanding horse... LUCK is always a factor... I have my fingers crossed.

Jeez... I could have won a fortune today.. on just the Caulfield Cup.!!
A really hard field to pick.... many possibilities.

I narrowed them down to three horses. For three very different reasons.

My main pick, and absolute sentimental favourite was Single Gaze, ridden by K O'Hara.. A tiny chestnut mare..ridden by a tiny female jockey, against the world's best horses. Another Michelle Payne/Prince of Penzance moment possible!!.
My sure bet for a place.. Johannes Vermeer, whose towering effort last week impressed heaps and showed his ability .I had him as a sure thing for a place.(altho there is no such thing as a sure thing)
My Instinctive tweak pick... Boom Time. I'd never heard of him, BUT.... I loved his sire Flying Spur... not a stallion heard about much.... I was happy to see one of his offspring showing up for the Caulfield Cup :bgrin And he was Number 13, drawn Barrier 3. Just sounded good.

I Got the paper Friday to check the fields...and these three were my go.
Results were:

Boom Time
Single Gaze
Johannes Vermeer

Sigh... I still have to say punting is a mugs game.

If I was looking at that field from the point of view of punting to win, I doubt my choices would have been the same. The stresses skew thought and create doubt. Glad I never got sucked in, even if, on the face of it I could make money.

Money isn't everything. :) :)

Yeah, the one where she missed the start, 5 lengths behind the horse immediately ahead of her—won the race!

So, on Saturday Winx will face a mostly new crop of horses. The ones who have been there in the past really only include the locals Happy Clapper and Seaburge with Humidor rep. NZ. ...... um
Most of the field are imports and it is hard to gauge their respective strengths. Moonee Valley is a tight track, and Winx has a familiarity with the Course bar none there. As long as she is ridden to clear on the outside, she will IMHO win by a huge margin.

Horses like Gallo Chop and Folkwood as foreign raiders are unlikely to have any impact on WINX, as long as she doesn't get in a tangle. Bowman ought to know how to ride her by now. :bgrin .

Her Barrier draw suggests she'll settle in her usual place. Not a large field, so , with good luck she'll b free of strife at the tail. Fingers crossed. It is the one thing about horse racing.. you can never predict what can happen. Hope she settles well in the barrier, before they are released.

2017 Ws Cox Plate.
Race Start : 4.00

Further to my previous posts.

So looking at the field...?

1st Winx
2nd/or 3rd Gallo Chop / Folkswood/ Hardham.

Based on distance ?? the only other horses in the race who have won at around the distance of the WS Cox Plate.
At 2040m , most of the rest of the field have not won at the distance
.
I'm ignoring the Barrier Draw.. it doesn't matter with a champion like Winx in the field.

Happy Clapper.. a worthy foe over lesser distances? He's raced hard and well this season. Perhaps too much of an ask. BUT you never know in Racing.

I make no promises. I don't bet myself. :hush

Winx wins her third Cox Plate! Close race apparently, pressed hard to the finish line. 22nd straight win!

Yep 3 in a row, this one a Race Record. She beat her own record set two years ago. :yahoo :yahoo :yahoo

I don't agree that she was hard-pressed, however. Its simply that no other horse has gained on her in the final few meters. She was always going to win, and you have to see how Bowman was handling her to know she had Humidor beaten.
A thrilling race indeed.
And an excellent run from Humidor, who is basically a stayer aimed for the Melbourne Cup. I didn't pick him because he had not impressed me last time up. But hey.. there is nothing like a Kiwi stayer to give a thrill. :thumb

I wonder when she will race next. her connections haven't said as yet, as is their wont.

Having now turned 6 years of age she is a mature (mare) horse.

Many people think horses mature earlier than that, but 6 is when they are in their prime.
Which is why I despise those who make a living racing two year olds. very few make it to maturity as a racehorse. I will name no names. Winx herself was started young... but she had the benefit of the best trainer in Mr Chris Waller.
A gentleman and a Kiwi.
