UK election 2017—aftermath

Postby HBS Guy » 09 Jun 2017, 18:54

Tories either govern with a razor thin majority or as a minority government in coalition with the Irish Unionists. Sinn Feinn picked up two seats but they don’t sit in Parliament, they boycott it. Not helpful to the progressive cause.

The Scottish National Party lost seats—Scots don’t want another referendum on independence which Sturgess wanted, followed by union with Eire so staying in the EU. Madness—Spain which has its own areas looking to secede would never allow it for one. So, shot herself in the foot there!

May won’t stay as PM. Boris Johnson won’t be elected, has not been a good boy over the last year.

Brexit will go on. Austerity? Think that might struggle on but will gradually be forgotten about, especially if Corbyn and Labour keep performing well.

Well, we will see how it all plays out. The Tories have had a big scare and Corbyn and Labour have received a big boost! Stay tuned!

S
peaking after he held his Islington North seat with an overwhelming majority, Corbyn said he was “very proud of the results that are coming in all over the country tonight”.

He said: “You know what? Politics has changed. Politics isn’t going back into the box where it was before. What’s happened is, people have said they’ve had quite enough of austerity politics, they’ve had quite enough of cuts in public expenditure, under-funding our health service, under-funding our schools, our education service, and not giving our young people the chance they deserve in our society.”

Oh my, isn’t Britain in for a good time!

DUP which will be a minority partner in a coalition with the Tories is a bunch of neanderthals, anti–abortion, jail any NI woman who has an abortion elsewhere, believe in creationism, don’t believe in AGW etc.

Should piss the country off even more at the Tories! :OMG

Nate Silver reckons UKIP were polling 4%, they got two per cent in the election.

Is desire for Brexit waning?

Joseph Stiglitz - I hope he's right: Austerity has strangled Britain. Only Labour will consign it to history

Is desire for Brexit waning?

When things are so close it doesn't take much to sway enough of the feeling the other way, instil doubt and fear etc. If Brexit does not go ahead, the failed EU will simply continue to export it's unemployment problem to Britain.

Well, in Europe nationalist, extreme right wing parties have had their wings clipped severely: Holland and France and now England. Trumpy should end that sort of feeling in the Us(!!!) and here the Libs are set for a pounding next election.

The UK will miss the common market tho!

Yeah, lets hope it isn't just talk!

And lets hope the dumb fuck conservatives here take notice of what their mob are doing over in the mother country.

Neo-liberalism is a failure, simple as that. The household sector can't keep on propping up the economy by going ever more deeply into debt in order to offset governments ongoing recalcitrance in their crucial spending responsabilities.

James B @piercepenniless
This letter, on RBKC's austerity & redistribution for the rich is required reading. Paget Brown must resign- the council is rotted through.

10:35 PM - 17 Jun 2017 · Camberwell, London

(RBKC—Royal Borough of Kensington & Chelsea)

RBKC is the richest area in the UK. It was the last electorate to be declared—for Labour! I guess the austerity by this council just got too much. Gives some hope that austerity as a policy really is finished in the UK. Might mean it is finished here and the US too.

Brilliant cartoon:

The 91yo Queen met firefighters and Grenfell tower residents before PM May did! As somebody wagged “91yo woman beat PM May to the tower.”

Theresa May’s office says about 600 buildings in England have cladding similar to the type blamed for the quick spread of flames in the London high-rise disaster. If so, it exemplifies what an abject failure deregulation and austerity has been!
