Work Release and the Absurdity of "Woke" Liberals

About a month ago, my daughter had some business to attend to in downtown Portland. It was a depressing experience. We went there on a weekday during normal business hours. Normally, downtown Portland is bustling with traffic, pedestrians, and businesses serving customers. What we found was a virtual ghost town - very little vehicular traffic, businesses boarded up because of the ongoing months of nightly riots and vandalism, almost no pedestrians, and garbage. Garbage everywhere.

The Portland I remember is a beautiful, vibrant city.

Garbage companies pick up garbage that their customers pay them to pick up - dumpsters outside of businesses and garbage cans outside of homes. But they don't pick up miscellaneous garbage, nor do they clean up illegal dump sites. So who has been cleaning that up in the past?

The answer is jail inmates. Let me explain "work release" to you.

People convicted of minor crimes - misdemeanors and non-violent felonies - are often given a county jail term, but they are often given "work release". If an inmate is on work release, they show up at the jail on Friday evenings and spend the night there. They are released on Sunday afternoon. This allows them to be home during the week and to hold a regular job. It also alleviates jail overcrowding. So if, for example, an inmate is given 30 days in jail, he can do 10 weekends on work release. These inmates agree to do supervised work on those weekends in exchange for the privilege of being on work release. I've seen them many times. They are given everything they need - protective gloves and boots, warm clothing, tools, etc. The County provides a truck to collect the garbage, and then it's taken to a legitimate dump.

They are the ones who have been doing clean-up around the city. Work release as an alternative to full time incarceration has been around in practice for decades. It is all perfectly legal. So why isn't this work getting done?

From The Oregonian newspaper. Please understand that the Oregonian, a Portland-based newspaper, has a strong liberal bent to its news. But here's what they reported ....

Metro will no longer use low-paid prisoners to help pick up piles of trash and large discarded items throughout Portland and the rest of Multnomah, Clackamas and Washington counties, according to the agency.

“It’s demoralizing to leave home and see the city and place you love covered in litter,” said Marissa Madrigal, Metro’s chief operating officer.

Prior to the pandemic, Metro paid about $1,800 a day to Multnomah County for four inmates and two deputies to clean illegal dumping sites, according to agency officials.

Amid ongoing social justice protests and political unrest, Metro officials decided late last year to stop using prison labor, Madrigal said.

“It’s problematic from a racial equity perspective,” said Madrigal, noting that inmates in Multnomah County and elsewhere are disproportionately people of color.

Meanwhile, illegal dumping in Portland has proliferated.

With only a pair of two-person work crews patrolling the region since last March, Metro takes an average of 38 business days to respond to an illegal dumping report, up from three days a year ago ...

I am just left open-mouthed at this rationale. Just when I thought these people couldn't get any stupider, they prove me wrong.

If this is what progressive liberalism is, count me out.

funny that ... we have no 'work release' here on the gold coast and it's pretty clean. I found the same thing when I was in Wollongong.

Seth, do you think the issue be something other than 'work release', and this is just another excuse for you to vent your hatred at 'progressive liberals'?

John, I freely admit that this is an excuse to vent my disgust with progressive liberals.

But I didn't make this up. It didn't come from Fox News. The quote is from the head of the agency - the horse's mouth, so to speak. And I have seen this blight in Portland with my own two eyes.

the horse is looking for excuses, not the cause of the problems. Or solutions.
