That is really interesting. When it had laid one egg the hen didn’t brood it much at all, slept standing up on the outer edge of the ledge. It laid another egg and now a third and now it seems to be brooding. I can’t see how the first egg can still be viable—too cold esp at night surely, esp the chilly Melbourne weather recently.

Could this be nature's way? I saw something on a nature show one time where an egg that didn't hatch was used as food for the chicks that did hatch.
