How you gonna keep a headstrong pup like that under control on an unfenced block?

Have plenty of posts (two pergolas + more for espalier, string a rope or wire between two of the posts, tie the lead to that, dog can walk/run quite a distance. Walk along the river, throw a ball for it to fetch, etc.

likely won't be going to Tasmania this year now Monk.
Border closed till December now..

Why a puppy.? There are lot of dogs, lovely dogs, that need a home.. and you don't have to train them,, just gain their trust.

That is true. All our dogs over the last 15 years have been rescue dogs. You can get pups from the centres too. Our current 2 dogs are from different centres and were pups when we bought them. You get a good deal as before the animals are released, they are checked by a vet, neutered or whatever and you often get a little pack of samples and goodies sent home with the animal. Plus the dog's personality is monitored and they aren't released if there are any issues. I can recommend this as a way to get a great animal. They won't often be pure bred but there is usually a good variety on offer and usually you can look online till you see one that appeals, then head in.

Yeah, I got Demi as a pup, maybe 4 months old—already had suffered abuse. Want a puppy so I can do obedience, agility and tracking training etc.

Crossbreeds are a better bet than a purebreed because they have a bigger genetic heritage to draw on.

With purebreed dogs, especially puppies there is a danger that someone will steal your dog. Someone had two Tenterfield terriers stolen—walking them off lead and someone bundled them into his car and drove off. Dreadfully upset the owner involved was, tried looking for her dogs in many ways without success. Another person had their German Shepherd off lead and it was enticed into someone’s car who then drove off.

I can understand people wanting purebreed Border Collies, the most trainable dog but for companion animals I recommend cross breeds.

yes my old girl is a bitzer. Big brindle and brash.. she now has lots of unfortunate lumps and such appearing now.. I'm keeping my eye on them.. think I'l start applying some Manuka honey to the ones she can't reach... they're on her head and neck. :(

she's going grey /gray..? Which is the name and which is the colour ? never get that right.......................

Yeah and due to many bad breeding practices , flaws are being genetically set into certain types of pure bred dogs.

Inbreeding is frowned upon but with a small enough genetic variation any mating is inbreeding. Then there is puppy farming and I will NOT buy from a pet shop and prefer a stray from the pound. A dog straying at least shows they like to investigate things not sleep all day.

I wonder whether Demi strayed because of the abuse or just her general love of escaping, to return in not that many minutes. I think the former is likely.

Yeah. Cats are not a pack animal, happy to have two humans feeding and petting it etc which a dog can’t do.

eh?
I don't understand your comment.
Cats.. had them all the time as a kid, but not good in the Aussie bush. .Wouldn't consider a cat now.

A dog wants a pack leader. One pack leader. Cats are not sociable, live independent in the wild. Easy to relate to more than one human.

Well, drove to the local pound—no problem me adopting a puppy but there are no puppies. Guess have to check the website 4.30pm daily.

Checked just now—no dogs either. Do people want a pet for company in COVID19 lockdown?
