Have a look—history as I like it, intermingling of technology, economics, politics, public moods, perceptions and tastes all combine to drive progress or reaction.

The train—wagon train—of a big army could be miles long and vulnerable as hell to a raid by enemy cavalry. Wagons would be stolen, or burned and the mules killed, often by sabre to save on ammunition. So you can imagine that US Civil War generals used railway trains where possible. Sh and cars he was senterman in Chattanooga needed to build up a huge mound of supplies for his campaign in Georgia leading to the capture of Atlanta. A single track railway, very slender supply line. Sherman started keeping every locomotive and box car sent to him. The guy sending the supply trains to Sherman noticed he wasn’t getting locomotives or cars back, contacted Sherman to find out what the hell was going on: Sherman told him to hang onto all locos and cars he was sent and supplies travelled down to Sherman on the campaign trail in a weird mix of cars incl some from the East coast! The Union and Rebel forces used the same railway line for supplies, the union from Chattanooga down and the Rebs from Atlanta up. Rebel cavalry would raid behind union lines, hack at the track and return before union troops arrived on the scene. Union engineers became extremely proficient and fast at replacing line, bridges etc: more than one Reb cavalry commander was telling his superior how they had put the line out of action for weeks, only to be interrupted by the whistle of a locomotive bringing supplies to the Union armies.

If you read Gone with the Wind you have read of the Union burning the sleepers (“ties” in yanky terminology) and heating the rails and bending them beyond salvage and reuse.

Sherman destroyed MILES of railway track on his March to the Sea and through South Carolina—the breadbasket of Georgia could no longer get food to Lee in Petersburg/Richmond in Virginia.

Railways played important roles in WWII. Now, I suppose, roads and semitrailers have taken over the logistics function of the railways as to a smaller extent has air—the Berlin crisis one good example of that.


None of this is really relevant to the video but is as to why I like watching videos like that.
