Many times I have told the members of this site that they shouldn't be hysterical and that the U.S. would have a peaceful transfer of power. And, as you all know, I predicted long ago - before Covid even - that Trump would not win reelection.
As it turns out, I was right about the election, but I was wrong about the peaceful transfer of power. I could not have imagined that what happened at the Capitol today would happen.
I am especially saddened at the report of a young woman being killed at the Capitol today. There are almost no details as I write this - who shot her and why - but it saddens me greatly.
Up until today I have defended President Trump's right to use the courts to dispute the election results. It mattered not to me that he lost those challenges, but I defended our system that allows grievances and disputes to be settled peacefully by courts of law rather than by violence. I also didn't care if some Representatives and Senators wanted to go through the parliamentary process of objecting to the vote certification that was scheduled for Congress today. It's available to them under the rules of Congress, and it has been used by Democrats in the past. In the end, it would make no difference, and after this process, the EC vote count would be certified, regardless.
You have also heard me defend the policy positions of President Trump - immigration, wars and defense, law and order, energy independence, 2nd Amendment, lower taxes on business, better trade deals, NATO, etc. Literally half of the population supports those positions, and I believe a lot of independents and some Democrats support at least some of them. Within that huge body of the populace, the vast majority are peaceful and law-abiding, smart, responsible, experienced, politically savvy, patriotic people of good faith. I can reliably speak for those folks when I say that we were embarrassed today by the crowd at the Capitol today. Had they merely assembled outside, that would have been fine. But breaking in and disrupting the work of Congress crossed a line that cannot be defended. And one young woman is dead.
Donald Trump, and he alone, is responsible for their presence there today and for their disposition to forcibly enter the Capitol. I also assign blame to him for the death of that young woman.
In light of the fact that he has lost the election, and in light of the events of today, Donald Trump should resign, and Mike Pence should serve as our President for the 2 weeks remaining of Trump's term in office. I don't expect Trump to do that, but that's my position.
I am going to close by saying that left-wingers and progressive Democrats have contributed to the atmosphere that have culminated in today's events. They have culpability as well.
Also, I can envision the potential of some good arising out of today's events. But I'll leave those topics alone for the time being.
